Update on my situation:
I am still looking for work in SA. Since I have degree in mathematics, I hope to be able to teach math at the high school level. Does anyone know if it's possible for public high schools there to sponsor expats? What about private high schools? I've searched on the internet and not been able to find any information about private high schools in SA.
I am also considering applying to the University of Johannesburg to be a doctoral student in 2007. Do you know anyone at the University that I could contact about the university and life as a postgraduate student?

You are talking about WITS university if Im correct in saying, as for JHB and where it is situated I would considere nother are to be honest, that part of JHB has almost become a no go area, with your degree why nt approach the goverment direct, if still read on here it would be nice to hear what you have decided to do..

Thanks for responding. I was starting to think that nobody cared. I check this site often. It's nice to hear from other ex-pats and (like me) ex-pat wannabes.
But yes, I still am looking for work in SA. I haven't had much luck. I didn't think about working for the govt. I'll look into that.
So far, people have mostly hung up on me. I rarely get replies to emails or phone calls. It's amazing that the country is supposedly in need of IT people, math teachers, and policy analysts, and I never hear anything back. I also have degrees in industrial engineering and sociology (been in academia for several years and want a change), along with the math degree. I don't want to do engineering, but I will if necessary. I get hung up on when I enquire about work from recruiting firms and individual companies in SA. I make calls to SA often.
Yes, JHB can be dangerous. So, I've been looking for work in Cape Town and Pretoria.
I may just end up teaching english in South Korea, at this rate.
I try to stay optimistic about the whole thing, but my patience is wearing very thin.
If anyone knows about how to actually find work in SA if you're non-South African, PLEASE let me know.
