Exporting a Spanish car to UK

Post Posted: Tue Apr 10, 2007 10:26 am

Hi,

I would like to ask about exporting a Spanish car to UK. I would like to buy a car from an English guy who bought it of Ford Dealer in Spain. This guy took the car to UK and sold it to another English guy who was going to take the car back to Spain and use it there. However this guy changed his mind, is not going to go to Spain and now he is selling the car. I don't know if the guy who bought it from Ford should have written to Spanish authorities about exporting the car. Also would you have any ideas as how to do a car data check on a Spanish registered car?

Thank you for your help. Jana

Well Jana, I imported a car from outside the EC to the UK some years ago and it basically consisted of having what is called an SVA test prior to being registered with the DVLA. I suspect though, that being a Ford purchased in the EC this might not be needed.

Heres a link to the licencing authorities on importing vehicles

www.direct.gov.uk/en/M.../index.htm

A word to the wise though, cars in the UK are cheaper than in Spain. Have a look around in the UK first to see if the price you are paying is OK

Hello Jenna,
First I would like to say welcome to Expat Focus, I am sure that you will enjoy the friendship that is here among our members, there is a wealth of information provided by the membership.

Ok now for your problem, first you must check the paperwork of the car to see if duties have been payed for it, any outstanding fines, Tax, etc from the Spanish side, you can do this by checking on the Spanish SUMA site (Data Check).

SUMA is the collection service used by the Spanish Government to collect all tax's here in Spain. If these have been payed then you can do the deal, if not then my advice is to stay away from the car, as any outstanding fines, or payments due on the car earn interest at a very high rate.

Next ask, How long has the car been in the UK?, has the documentation been exchanged by the two owners that have had the car?, first in Spain, then the guy who is now selling the car?

Be very careful checking this information or you could end up paying very dear for the car and its debuts. I do hope this helps you in your question?

Hi Countryboy,

many thanks for your reply. Could you possibly give me the exact link on SUMA page. Something, you can just type the VIN number and pay online for the check.

Now, to you question. The registered keeper, the English guy, who bought it of Ford dealer, sold the car in UK. He came back from Spain with the car last July. The other guy was going to transfer the paperwork for him but he never did it, so the first English guy is still the registered keeper of this car.

Hope, it all makes sense.

I really appreciate your help.

Jana

I like this car so much. I am Czech and I would like to take it home with me when I leave UK for good.

Hi Mitzyboy,

thank you for your reply. Being Czech, I would like to buy a left hand drive car that I could take home with me when I leave UK for good. I just like this car so much. I know it will be a hassle to register the car in UK and then register it again in the Czech Republic. But here you go Very Happy

Hello Jena,
It would see to me that you want to take this care to the Czech republic? It would make sense then to get the car registered in the country that it is going to.

You must ensure that the Car has no debut on it, or you will have very real problems when you try to re-register it. Only you can do this. You can ask SUMA for details of the car so long as you have the registration Number of the Car and its last owner. I think the fee for doing this is only about 20 euros, but you can check online with SUMA. URL below

Hi Countryboy,

many thanks for your reply. I went on www.SUMA.es but did not find anything where to put the details of the car. I know everything, I know the registration plate, the details of the last registered keeper and even the VIN number. I thought there would be some online facility as it is here in UK on www.hpi.com, where you can check details online and pay online for it.

Is there a way you can do it online or do you have to post some form somewhere and wait months for the reply? Smile

Thanks ever so much,

Jana

I know it would be more sensible to register the car in the Czech Republic but I am now living here in UK. I am not going to leave for couple of months and I would like to use the car here, which I can't do unless it is UK registered.
