Some do, that's certainly true (in fact, for some it appears to be their raison d'être). I've always been puzzled by why that should be the case given that there are a number of factors which might make you think emigrating to NZ should be one of the more successful relocation experiences (relative to other destinations where English-speaking expats probably face greater challenges in terms of language, culture, even weather!)
I suspect that that actually is the case, and that most people do emigrate successfully but clearly there's a group which feel their expectations have not been met - and are vocal in expressing that. From my perspective I think it's important that we encourage honest discussion, but that the discussion is balanced and good natured - admittedly, not always an easy ask when you've moved to the other side of the world and found it's not what you expected.
I'd love to see more discussion of the New Zealand expat experience this year - welcome to the site!
Jamie

I don't know, seems that the NZ expat forums have that in common ...

Hallo, from deepest darkest Africa (ok a little south of deepest Africa)
We are looking to move to NZ and hopefully soon, I have filled in our EOI form but for the life of me can't seem to finish the qualification and work experience section I am stuck on 92% completed I have looked for drop downs ,extra pages and can find none our points are 135 but I can't submit. any ideas??
My husband is an electrician and has had his trade papers assessed by EWRB in Christ Church so there should be no problem but I am still stuck.
I canot wait ti get there so any advise would be great as well as should we take a container or buy new once there and any websites that have furniture prices and shops will be appreciated
Thanx
Marcia

Do you mind my asking why NZ and not Australia? The job market isn't exactly buzzing in NZ right now and there's probably more choice across the Tasmin.
Depends on how much stuff you've got and if your country has a sea port. Generally the advice is to bring everything you have and ensure the container is full. NZ dollar is weak right now and imported goods (TVs, fridge, computers etc) are rising in price.
If you're white South African please be aware there is still some anti-SA sentiment still in NZ.

This is truly a feeble argument comparing NZ to Australia and suggesting that there is no anti-SA sentiment in Australia? Of course it exists there! It exists all over the world! Why are you advocating that it does not exist in Australia? I have written a post about the anti-SA sentiment in NZ in another thread. My experiences have taught me that most of the anti-SA sentiment overseas (NZ and Australia included) originate from British Immigrants, who generally form part of the larger immigration groups in these countries.

Note however, as a SA immigrant, you will not face controversial opposition from Kiwis only. The largest immigration group in NZ is British, who have generally made no secret of their dislike of South African immigrants overseas. They argue that South Africans should stay in their country to sort out the problems, rather than "run away". A statement drowning in contradiction from British immigrants and Kiwis who emigrate to Australia in staggering numbers. I suspect that the anti-South African sentiment in NZ has majority British origin and is merely propogated further by Kiwis, who seem to be intimidated by the British. (purely personal observation). This complicates the paradox even further because of the little known fact that the inception of segregation between white and black started with British rule in South Africa.
Examples :
1. The Urban Areas Act (1923) which introduced residential segregation in South Africa and provided cheap labour for the white mining and farming industry;
2. The Colour Bar Act (1926), preventing blacks from practising skilled trades;
3. The Native Administration Act (1927) that made the British Crown, rather than paramount chiefs, the supreme head over all African affairs;
It is advisable to avoid all interaction and discussion relating to Apartheid and racism overseas. The more you try to justify, educate or offer logical explanations, the more you will be ridiculed. You have to adopt a strict, unapologetic attitude, ready to defend yourself based on hard facts, rather than logic, a survival tactic that served me well.
