IMPORTING A CAR TO HOLLAND FROM THE UK
IMPORTING A CAR TO HOLLAND FROM THE UK
Posted: Wed May 07, 2008 11:13 am
My daughter will be joining us here in Holland for a holiday with a view to living in The Netherlands full time. She has a car and I wondered how long she can leave her car with a UK registration plate until she has to change to a Dutch licence plate and import the car.
Thanks

If the law hasn't changed - you can drive upto 12 months (maybe even 6?)
with foreign plates before having to change to Dutch plates.
RDV, Veendam - Hey, you're walking disctance from there - can advise you better.
On a personal note/advise don't import UK car in NL. It's very expensive and longwinded. Doanne restrictions on not allowing you to sell, hire, rally, race, whatever might prove expensive as well. Just sell the UK car in in UK and start afresh in NL with stearing wheel on the correct side for the driver !

Thanks for the reply - my insurance in Holland told me yesterday it was three months!! I wont have an option I will lose two thousand pounds and Im not prepared to do that as its a new car, so I suppose Ill have to weigh up the costs now and find out more information.
The insurance told me it was E95 and some paperwork, now I need to find out for sure if they are right.

I now have the answer to my question from the customs. I spoke with them today and here is the answer for your information
My daughter is allowed to stay in Holland as long as she wants without working here
She can bring her car to Holland and live here for 6 months without importing the car. After that time she must consider either going back to the UK or importing the car.
However, if she starts work in Holland and is registered with the Gemeente and has a Sofi Nummer, then she must also at the same time change her registration and import the car.
I hope this helps anyone else reading this.

Does somebody know how much would cost (economically and emotionally) to bring to the Netherlands temporary a car from Finland? In my case the difficulty is that the car is registered in Finland and I have Russian citizenship. Does it affect somehow?

Hi OrangutanSaver,
During a holiday it is no problem to have a foreign car and a foreign driving license. If your daughter really wants to stay in the Netherlands, the RDW (Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer) can tell you more about the driving license and the UK registration plate.
Their telephone number +31 598 39 33 30 (from abroad) or 0900 07 39 (€ 0,10 p.m.) from the Netherlands.
Good luck,
Agnes

This is a very chicken and egg situation. I really will have to make a list of items of what I do first.
The DVLA are happy to let the car go to Holland based on filling in the UKregistration document with the part to say that the car has been exported to an EU country and send the form back to the DVLA
You can use the rest of the registration document to register the car in Holland (so they say)
Im told it costs E50 for a car check at the RDW station
Then you pay E46 for the papers
Plus your car tax costs VPN for the year. You can pay monthly I believe.
Ill post more on this as I go along
