Teaching in Dubai

Post Posted: Sat Mar 07, 2009 6:09 pm

Hi everyone!
I'm new to the forum. I'm a MFL secondary school teacher looking to move to Dubai. I've trawled the internet looking for information on international schools and have recently found a vacancy at the Dubai International School. Was just wondering if there are any teachers out there who could tell me a little about their experiences. Are there any schools that i should definitely avoid?!
Thanks...

Hi SGC

Welcome to the posts.

I'll let Dubai residents and teachers respond directly - You have access to inspection reports for supervised curriculums.

This is obviously recruitment season - many interviews and offers already completed. Good luck Y&F

Are you still considering Dubai? We are in RAK and have had a not so typical experience with a new school that is now closed and don't want to turn you off to teaching internationally. Do you have any general questions?

Thanks for taking the time to reply Yankee!
I have actually just secured a HOD position in a primary school in Dubai, so there's no turning back now!! The school seems very organised. They're sorting out my accomodation at the moment and have sent me details of my induction period at the end of August.
Are there any general survival tips you can give me for my first few months?!

Well congrats. Hmmm, it's going to be hot? haha. We were told we could find everything here. Almost true with one exception that we haven't found yet, and maybe you'll have better luck in Dubai. We never would have thought of it....Vanilla Extract. Because it has alcohol in it, it will be taken out of your household goods that will go through a very thorough Customs Inspection. So, tuck a bottle in with your suitcase and it shouldn't be bothered.
And, if you are a clean freak like us, pack some grout cleaner in with your stuff. I haven't found the good stuff even at Ace Hardware. Also, hard to find Crayola products here. Anything else, just ask.

It's not tough to get a teaching job here. It's better if you have a teaching certificate/license. We've met people who are teaching without those papers. The better the school, the more it wants to get and retain good teachers. The ministry is starting to crack down a bit lately. Good luck.
