Jobs & Wages
Jobs & Wages
Posted: Thu Jul 09, 2009 8:05 pm
Hi all (again!),
As from my previous post you may see we are seriously considering taking the plunge of moving away from the UK!
-What sort of jobs are there for British people to do all-year round?
We are both unskilled as such as i have warehouse, driving, hotel and call centre experience and my partner has hotel, restaurant and cleaning experience.
-What sort of wages after all deductions would be be looking at?
-Are there any thing such as tax credits etc etc (im not going to sponge off the Cyprus Government)
-Would our son be entitled to any child benefit as such?
Just trying to sort out finances etc etc
Thanks for reading, i look forward to your replies!

To legally live here you will have to take out private medical insurance - expensive! You will have to provide proof of income. Next, you will possibly have to pay for your son's schooling unless you put him in a local school which could present language problems. I admit to not being up-to-date on that, perhaps someone more knowledgeable could help. Cyprus has not remained free of the recession with tourism down, the building industry certainly slowing and in some areas stopped. Jobs ARE difficult to find. Rent has been creeping up and food prices continue upwards. We watch the ads on UK TV and drool..... Quite simply, unless you have a good, well paid job to come to you are going to struggle and I am sorry I can't paint a better picture for you.

As JohnT said, it's not the ideal place to come at present, especially if you don't have an income to fall back on, as jobs are none exsistant, if you're lucky to get a job, the wages are approx €2.50 - €4.00 a hour unless you're a Solicitor, Architect or Accountant, otherwise don't expect anything else!!
Tourism is seriously low in the Paphos region especially with most hotels that are still open offering fully inclusive holidays, so the traders outside are having to lay off staff due to the tourists not having to spend anything in the pub, clubs & restaurants!
I suppose there is always cleaning jobs but again, don't expect great wages, some charge €10 a hours but very few will pay that as they can get a Bangladeshi to do it for half that & cheaper, so unless you have work to come out too or money to sit on, then it's not a good move at present!!
Sorry it's not good news & until the recession ends, you'll find a lot of ex-pats returning to the UK due to the economic situation over here!!!

I have to Agree with Cyprus-Toon. We had a villa in Cyprus and sold it,we was going buy another but my work slowed down so much that we thought we shall hang on until things pick up.
As Cyprus is getting more and more expensive now, we are thinking of buying in Spain instead. We love Cyprus, it is a great place, but they need to reduce landing fees so more flights will go there and in turn so will people.
You will find it hard to get a job I would have thought as so many people are looking for a job already in Cyprus.
But good luck if you go ahead and wish you well.
