Maybe moving to India
Maybe moving to India
Posted: Tue Sep 29, 2009 4:16 pm
Hello everyone,
I am new here. I have a possible job prospect in India, possibly in Hyderabad or Chennai. We are both in the field of Education: me linguistics and my wife is a German teacher (she has no job lined up). We have never been to India but are really keen on a on making a radical change (we live in Austria at the moment and are bored out of our brains).
Any advice would be most appreciated.
Thanks.
Phil

Dear Phil,
I would love to just say go as loved the experence of India but cant say that as have not tried yet to actually live there. We live in Turkey and went over to India for a long break (3 months) and just adored the country. Thats a long way from living in a new place though. I moved to Turkey 14 years ago and have had just a few times I regretted and then quickly recovered. My husband is Turkish and I grew up in Ireland and we have thought a lot about moving to India but as yet have not had the resources to do so. Anyway no that was most likely about as much help as a wet flannel but just wanted to encourage you to seriousely think about it as me & my husband are very much fans of the counrty.
Regards
Yvonne

Hello:
It is quite interesting that a male from Turkey would like to live in India...?? I am partly Turkish myself, and a female, very familiar with the history and the culture of both Turkey and India.

Hi BearFeet,
Yes it is unusal that a Turk would want to settle in India but my husband has had more of an international up bringing than most Turkish men, I do feel lucky as would not have settled for the usual Turkish attatude to women, hope thats ok to write here. We have been thinking so much about how we could settle there and as yet it all seems just a dream. We both found the people wonderfull and felt so relaxed in India it gave us the insperational idea of a possability of another life style. Do you visit India & Turkey much ? if so how do you find the cultures, India is vast and we have only been to a small part of it I think we have a lot to learn but are very eager to learn all about the different types of people living there. My husband loves hearing about different cultures and I have been a wandering sort of person nearly all my life. Would love to hear your ideas...

Hello Gocek:
Thank you for your reply.
I am pretty sure a Turkish woman would like India but a man...I didn't think so. The other day I met a Turkish man who is living in China, so, world is changing ...:)
I went to Istanbult for 2 years to study the history and the culture of Turks, that was 25 years ago...it must be different now. I also studied the history and the culture of India in India for 2 years as well.
You think the attitude of Turkish men towards women is not good...!? If you grew up in an International family, and studied the cultural archeology of many nations, and lived in many countries as I did you wouldn't think so.. My mother is partly Irish and she didn't think the Irish men was great in treating women either....!!
India is in a different class, actually it is the only country in its class. You must have a strong desire to live in that culture to put up with all the hardship you will face. You would suffer, I mean realy suffer, if you jump on a plane and go just because you thought "people were wonderful"! It is not heaven, it is heaven and hell...it would make you run back to Turkey!!
I will settle in India, but I know what I am getting mysel into, it is worth to me to walk around the hell for the sake of the heaven.
Regards

Hi Bearfeet,
Thank you for replying, yes understand that it was a bit of an overall remark regards Turkish men, this is my 2nd marriage and when I was living in Ireland no one would of persuaded me to marry an Irish man at that time. I saw too much distress caused by an ultra macho up bringing (my husband insists that he is half Greek as his Mother was Greek so I have to be careful not to describe him incorrectly).
Turkey has changed from when you where here and possible somethings not for the best as things are changing towards a less free society in many ways though you may not notice this at a glance.
The 1st thing that struck me with India was that life is cheap there I have also lived in Africa and life is cheap there too. I can well imagine there are a number of pitfalls in India and would hate to become part of a desperate mass of people trying to survive in a country of few resources.
We who have had the privilege of a western society have not the guts for that, though I have not the guts for the western way of life either. Possible here lies my predicament to live a life of relative security without having to put up with what comes along with that. The endless indoctrination of capitalism while having to comply with its laws of rat eat rat for a mediocrity of a life style which brings its own nightmares. Not sure if I am explaining myself that well but I always felt that the western life style was soulless and everday seemed to bring that awful reality home to me.
Back to India would it be possible that walking around hell with paradise in your head was any better than walking around heaven with hell in your head.
I look forward to communicating more and hearing about how India is to actually live in and survive in as a person who would have I suspect not that many resources to fall back on (me).
India is a unique place and its culture so old I feel they have lived more than one life as far as culture is concerned. Maybe they have a collective awareness brought about by many 1000's of years of success and failure which makes them capable of living together. I hope we can carry on our conversation.
Regards

Hello Gocek:
First, you misunderstood my statement about "Turkish man", that is exactly what I meant, "man", not including "Turkish woman": Turkish man need a job, most likely supporting his family too, thus India would be nothing but an adventure for him. In other hand, a Turkish woman could live on a small income for the romantic dreams of India, in India. Romanticism mean not falling in love with an Indian man but with Mother India...
Secondly, you are very wrong making a negative blanket statement about Turkish men without defining what is the "attitude" you don't like, and support it with a solid research; Picking up a few statements here and there and your own experience would be counted as "vining", born out of your ignorance and prejudices!
This ignorance also showing in your thoughts about India, since ignorance doesn't work only in negative directions: How can you talk about the bad attitude of Turkish men towards women in the same moment praising the Indian people? You have no idea what is going on in the world, definitely you don't appreciate the caring and decent people of Turkey - You must have lived a very easy life, have taken but not given; It is time to get down from you horse and walk with the rest of the Turks!
Just a piece to taste: How much money, property and other assets you have brought to your husband and your in-laws as your dowry?? Nothing, I am sure of it! Every year 20,000 brides are burned to death in India by their husbands and in-laws because they were not able to bring enough dowry - those are the "wonderful " people you have met in India!!!
Do you still want to correspond with me...?
Regards.
