Pros and cons

Post Posted: Tue Nov 10, 2009 8:37 pm

Szia one and all.
I wondered what you permanent residents would list under the pros and cons of relocating to Magyaroszag.
Come to that, does anyone actually regret it?

Hi, we don't regret it at all and don't want to return to England other than to visit family and friends.
It has not been an easy ride though.
Although having visited many times before moving here the actual cost of living is much higher than we anticipated so make sure your finances are in order.
Bureaucracy is a nightmare. There is official paperwork for everything. Very often it is easier for an official to say something can't be done than actually do it.
Don't bring an English car, it's not worth the hassle, buy a Hungarian car once here but expect to pay 2-3 times the price you would in England for a used one.
The language can also be a real problem so make sure you have a good contact who can speak English and Hungarian.
Customer service is almost non existant in most places.
All that aside, the pace of life here is much more relaxed, the people are very friendly, we have proper seasons and the cost of living is far less than in the UK.

hi janus we do not regret it one little bit.

there are so many pros to many to mention but will give you a few. the summer weather, the cost of living, the whole adventure, the country it's self. no traffic jams only in budapest, no double yellow lines, no sleeping policemen. lots and lots of fresh fruit and veg that have not been picked one month to early and ripen on route to the UK. Lots of western good in the shops now.

the cons is the language. been looking at this for 5 mins now and cant think of another con.

we first came to hungary on holiday and while driving round the lake one evening as the sun was setting. me and hubby looked at each other and both said " i could be quite happy living my last days here" and thats what did it for us.

Thanks for that you two.
I'm sort of teetering on the brink of the big decision and your honest thoughts are greatly appreciated.
The 31 days I've spent there this year certainly helped to form a positive opinion.
The language is challenging for sure but with time and effort...........
Thanks for the tip on the car Paul. I have been wondering about that, but can't see how people on comparatively low incomes can afford to pay 3 times our prices. Is there a shortage of vehicles?
Anyway, thanks again.

Far from it. There are lots of new and used vehicles here. I can only guess that the prices stem from the communist era when everything was in short supply. However, in order to import a vehicle into Hungary the costs involved in re-registering it are extortionate, hence, to make more vehicles available they were imported from neighbouring countries, re-registered here and then sold on with the added costs incorporated into the sale price......but I may be wrong. As an example, a few years ago I was going to drive my Vauxhall Cavalier over here from England and re-register it. The car was worth about £300 in England but over £2000 here. The cost to re-register it was going to be around £2000!!!!! I see numerous English cars around Eger but I know that several are owned by Hungarians who've bought them cheap and drive around with no insurance, mot etc. With hindsight there's no way we'd have brought our car over. It was/is worth far more in the UK and it's a lot of hassle driving back each year to mot it etc.
Depending on what you want, smaller Suzuki Swifts and Ignis's aren't too expensive as they're made here.

Hmm.
Well, that's good advice and is noted.
Have a great weekend.
(We are going to have a wild one with winds gusting to 80mph and lashing rain (again!)). Oh joy.
They'd better not tell us there's a water shortage next year!

Hi my wife and I took early retirement, sold up in the UK and traveled around europe in our campervan, after looking for somewhere to live, we ended up in Lajosmizse some 60kms south of Budapest 30 months ago.

We didn't know anything about the country but bought our house, since then we have loved every minute, the people, the food, the way of life.

I bought a new Suzuki Swift Sport for less than I could buy it in the UK, road tax is less than the UK although the price of food/living is a little higher than I thought it would be.

Summers are long and warm and Winters are cold but normally dry, far better climate than in the UK.

Respect is still considered a positive thing and I have not seen any groups of hoodies etc on the street corners.

Hungary has issues social, political and financial and without a lot of change will continue having these problems but quality of life, lack of stress etc etc give me Hungary over the UK
