Hi there,
I'm 65, retired, and lead a very active life. I moved from the US to the UK about 14 years ago, living in Scotland. My justification for moving to the UK was that the rest of Europe was next door. I love Scotland, two of my children live here, but Scotland is just a colony after all.
Last year I took a trip to Athens and stayed at a inexpensive hotel in Monastiraki. It was perfect, right in the center of everything. I spent the 11 days I had allocated, at as many museums and archaeological sites as I could manage, while still leaving time to visit friends. I loved every minute of it. It was a thrill seeing the Caryatids with my own eyes. And the Acropolis and the New Acropolis museum, what a museum, an architectural triumph...
My plan is to move to Athens in late Summer, early Autumn 2010. I'm teaching myself Greek using the BBC's CDs and book "Greek Language and People". By the time I move there I'll be able to converse, not like a native but enough to get by.
Hope to talk to some of you soon...

Hi,
I'm David, 64, retired from the UK. I moved to France just over 3 years ago but am now moving again, this time to Crete. My wife Bunny is on a long term career break and may or may not have to return to the UK, having failed to get early retirement. Now living on my civil service pension and looking forward to a new house in Crete provided the builder does not go bankrupt. Having great difficulty in legally taking my French registered Landrover Freelander to Crete since have failed to contact anyone in the GreeK Consulate who admits that they need to deal with my change of residence certificate here before I leave in March. Have to take car since too much personal baggage to go by air.
My french is quite fluent and my Greek needs practice. Moving from the UK was straightforward but from France to Greece when neither French or Greek is complicated.
We have had a small holiday villa in Crete for 5 years now which was bought to rent as a source of income but Greek laws on renting out property, if followed make it impossible so have decided to sell and buy larger house to retire to. Previous 3 years my wife ran this house as a B&B but have now decided to retire completely.Have already made lots of friends in Crete
Interested in languages, DIY politics, science and staying alive long enough to enjoy retirement.Still have siblings in UK and many friends there too. Look forward to other expats views.
This is my first message so please excuse verbosity.
