Animal Rescue Centres & Welfare in Portugal
Animal Rescue Centres & Welfare in Portugal

Animal Welfare
There have been several posts on the forums recently which have highlighted the plight of both abandoned and neglected animals
...please see links below
How to choose a boarding kennels or cattery
Volunteers needed
Horse in Need
Expat Abandoned Animals help
I have therefore started this topic to help raise awareness
How can we help?
I thought it would be useful to compile a list of the various Animal Charities and Rescue Centres in the Algarve, Central and Northern Portugal as a “Sticky” topic on the forum. Your input in providing the following information would really be appreciated.
Details to include:
Name of Animal Shelter/Charity
Address
Tel Number
Email Website
Brief description
If you run an Animal Shelter or Charity and would like to advertise forth coming events, please see What's on in Portugal Forum.
I understand many Animal Shelters and Charities rely entirely on an army of energetic volunteers without whom they would not exist; hopefully, this topic will help spread the word.
Plus…
If you are looking to rehome any animals...please advertise here
Plus
Expat Focus Country Guide - with your help we would also like to update the section on Taking your pets in the country guide. Please let me know if the current information is still correct and what additional information (if any) should be included.
Please post your suggestions
Kind Regards
Carole

Hi All,
As some of you or some of you may not know from reading the Portuguese News and various postings on the internet that
* * * GOLDRA ANIMAL RESCUE CENTRE TO CLOSE * * *
Maria Lourdes who started the Quintinha Rescue Centre in 2000 has decided that the Centre will close at the end of May this year, due to ill health and her age. Unfortunately this means that no more animals can be taken in by the Centre.
Funds are still needed to enable them to continue looking after the remaining animals. The Goldra Charity Shops in Quarteira and Sao Bras will still welcome your goods to sell. If furniture needs to be picked up and for directions to both shops you can call Bernadette on Tel 915806647/915806674.
They now have the task of finding good homes for all the remaining dogs and the cats in Cat Village.
Please visit their website www.quintinha-animalcentre.org
to see the dogs & cats available or please contact Ingrid 918973896 or Verna 962560451 / 282449395 to arrange visits.
For the cats please contact Helena 918149187 for more information.

We adopted out daft dog from here:-
www.bianca.pt/english/
This is he! We though the name was Murphy, so that is what he is, thought it was a strange name for a Portuguese dog.
He is listed on the adopted dog site as Sharpie adopted as Marfie.

I hope homes can be found for these lovely animals, wish I could help but I cannot yet. Well done to all of you who give your time and do what you can for them. The situation is bad enough already and now I read that returning expats are leaving their animals too, shame on them, some I'm sure could take them!!

Hi all,
my partner and l came over here for a long break and will be going home in just over a week. While here we have done what a lot of people do when they go to foreign parts and that is start to feed the stray animals they come across. The problem is when you go back home and have to leave the strays to fend for themselves again it becomes very emotional so we started to look in the expat focus and other forums to see if we could get a little help for our stray cats ( we have provisionally named 9 of them ) but there were 19 in november before that big storm, one of the anglers told me he saw a few dead cats washed up afterwards in villa real san antonio east algarve. My other half calls them the sea cats because they live on and inside the sea barrier which separates the river from the sea.My point being that there seem to be very few rescue centres and that started me thinking. There must be people out there who actually live here and travel around feeding strays using their own money? We found a lady in spain called Tosh who did this 18 months ago who we still chat to by email. lf so lets hear your stories and a few piccys would be good as well.A lot of these animals already have communities so they don't neccessarily NEED re-homing but might like to be
They do need love & fuss, cuddles & extra food;it's amazing how much ''our'' cats' confidence has grown from us bringing toys, they've come so much out of their shells! We cannot take any on because we are owned by our elderly burmese who still insists on fighting anything that comes near her;whether four or two-legged,or even twice her size!!!!!l
Of course she travels everywhere with us;we want to get visas stamped in her pet passport LOL,so far we've done france, spain, benelux & portugal;she's loving the fuss by now;-)
PS we have LOTS of pix if anyone would like to see 'em.sea cat piccys
l dont want to hijack this thread so maybe this could go in maybe a sticky of its own?
We really hope this becomes a very active thread so will keep looking in.

The Cedar Centre in Central Portugal does a great job caring for all sorts of abandoned and mistreated animals. They run a car boot sales the 1st Sunday every month at Miranda do Corvo. It's inside the municipal market in winter, but outside when the weather gets better.
There website has lots of information about what they do
