Looking for advice about Manchester
Looking for advice about Manchester
Posted: Mon Mar 15, 2010 1:57 am
We are considering a move to the Manchester area. The office is in Cheadle and we are looking for a nice area with good schools. Any advice about the towns in the area: places to focus on and areas to stay away from. Thanks for any tips.

Hi tbirdalum
Welcome to Expat Focus
There are several nice areas in and around Manchester. However, it may be an idea to research the schools first, and then decide on the location. I have included some links below which I think you will find really useful for Parent Power
Parent Power has been designed to enable you to quickly search and compare the top 2,000 state and independent schools, all ranked by their recent examination results
Search for Schools
and
League Tables
The above is a fully searchable database of Britain's leading schools.
Please let me know if you found the above information useful and if I can be of further assistance
Kind regards
Carole

Hello Carole,
Thanks for the tip. Any thoughts on the villages in the south of Manchester. There are some good schools in rough areas (ie Salford). Do you have any thougths about the area? Thanks for the tips above. I am a diving in as I type this.

You must be mad wanting to move to Manchester, especially after the Winter we have just had. I cant wait to retire to Portugal. Regarding areas
ie Salford there are some nice parts of Salford especially Worsley where I live. The best Junior school in Greater Manchester is just around the corner from where live. Ellenbrook Primary if you want to look it up on the net. Also there are 2 good high schools, one is a Catholice school. There is also a good private school, Bridgewater School.
Good Luck

Hi Tbirdalum,
Try Cheadle Hulme. Short trip to work and some pretty good schools (Private and Public), try to get a house in Parkfield Road!! Used to live there.
Regards
Robin
BUT - I agree with Elaine! Here it has been sunny & warm for the last few days - broke out the shorts even!

Thanks, Elaine and Robin, for the input. We are moving from Minnesota, so it's almost like moving South for us: -45 F in the winter with 8 feet of snow. I had looked at Cheadle Hulme and it does look very nice. Nothing beats local advice!
Thanks,
Thanks,

Hi there tbirdalum,
Having read your request, I passed the information on to my brother-in-law who was a school teacher in Cheadle and now lives in the Marple Bridge area of Manchester.
This was his response: "I hope the following information will be of some use.
As the people will be working in Cheadle the area around Cheadle is affluent and house prices are expensive for Gatley and Cheadle.
I would recommend The Kingsway School in this area which is one of the best schools in Stockport.(not just because I worked there but confirmed by "Ofstead" The catchment area for this is Heald Green and Gatley.
In general I would stay south of Manchester .Areas out from Cheadle which are very pleasant and semi rural and have good schools are Bramhall and Hazel Grove but again house prices can be expensive. These are within a suitable distance for travelling to work in Cheadle-6/8miles"
I, too, hope that this information is of some use to you.
