Nearly there

Post Posted: Mon Jun 07, 2010 2:59 am

Lots of progress since we last posted thankfully, and have eventually negotiated the protracted paper chase with the CIC, CPSO and numerous other august bodies with C in their acronym. Permit now in passport (and a very uninspiring scrap of paper it is too after all that endeavour...) and just returned from house-hunt visit. The kids have had taster day at new school and loved it, and final countdown has begun to departure in July. Few questions now that I'm hoping Mr. Bunting et al can provide their advice with..

1. Lump sum transfers - we have the proceeds of our house sale here sitting in various accounts - is there a taxation issue with bringing money into Canada? There seem to be notices at the airports about importing cash - is it different for a one-off electronic import? what of transfers the other way? if we send money back to the UK, is there a limit or taxation burden for doing this?
2. health insurance - I gather we have to wait three months in Ontario for eligibility for medicare via OHIP - anywhere we can compare and contrast the various companies who would be able to offer insurance for that three month period?
3. cars - some of our Canadian friends have suggested leasing as an option, but this isn't something we've any great experience of. Any thoughts welcome.
4. PR - currently we'll be entering Canada on a TWP, but with a job that is permanent, as much as any job can be permanent. Is the PR process any quicker if you're already resident in Canada, and who do we apply to - the Canadian High Commission in London still, or somewhere in Canada?

Thanks in advance

1. With regards to the money - check out this link: www.settlement.org/sys...id=4000258
Basically there is no limit to bringing money in to Canada. There doesn't appear to be any limit on sending money back to the UK.
2. We have compared most of the companies for health insurance and have found Manulife is one of the best. www.coverme.com
3. Lease to buy can work out to be expensive so be sure to shop around for the best deal. We paid cash for a run around until we had achieved a sufficient credit rating to purchase a car.
4. Again, we came out on a TWP and it still took us 2 years to get our PR while living in Canada. Information is available through www.cic.gc.ca.

Hope this answers some of your questions, but feel free to post any additional ones you may have!

Hi Lyn,

With regard to point 4 of your reply to the member;
Did you simply re new your TWP every 6 months while awaiting your PR?
Or did you have to leave the country at the end of each period?

Secondly:
What's the definitive time period that a UK passport holder can visit Canada before having to leave, and more importantly, how long do they have to stay out before re entering?
I remember you saying your daughter had to leave before re entering, but is the time you stayed in Canada related to the time you have to stay out? ie: if I stayed for 6 months, how long do I have to stay out before being able to re enter? I cant seem to get a straight answer to this fundemental question.

All the best, and Happy New Year.

Hang on..... TWP is for one year right? And you are only allowed 2.

I guess you can tag one on the end of the first? Is that right?

My understanding was the temporary work permits had to be renewed after 6 months, but I would need to clarify that.

I think the new ones are a year, and there are only 5000 given per year.

I could be wrong.
