Driving to BG
Driving to BG
Posted: Fri Jul 30, 2010 7:40 pm
We are having problems getting green card to cross Serbia and we dont want to drive through Romania (ever again), we are staying in BG over a month so if we cross Serbia we'll have to pay the 110 Euros insurance in each direction. We have been thinking of driving through Italy/Greece. Has anyone done this, if so which route and which ferries did you use, also any advice? Or is there another route we've missed?
Many thanks

Hi there
Can't give much advice as not done it myself, but most people I know go through Romania. I do know 2 other couples who have driven via Italy and Greece, they say it's a really ncie journey, they get the ferry it Igoumenitsa on the northern coast of Greece. They say that the journey over the mountains can be a little hairy at times, but a nice trip.
Like I said, this is only what I've been told and can't tell you from experience.

The first time that we ever came here was between Xmas and New Year’s Eve, 2006. It was spur of the moment. However, we had enough foresight to get a green card. Our insurance company at the time would not issue one. So, we changed insurance companies. It wasn’t any big deal, was done very quickly, the insurance didn’t cost much more than we had been paying and the green card was issued straight away. I think that we received it about four days before we were to leave. Having said all that, I can’t remember who we were with beforehand but we switched to Zurich. Incidentally, the second time that we made the trip, 15 months later, we were moving here with a car packed to the brim, the same insurance company were adamant that we didn’t need one and, despite arguing with them, unfortunately, we gave in and believed them. That cost us dearly at the border. Since then, we have been with Bulgarian insurers and either travelled via Romania or had them issue a green card, for about the equivalent of £20. Some insurers here issue them for free.
There must be someone out there who will issue the card. It may (and probably does) cost money. I think we paid about £30. I guess the moral is that you look around for alternative insurance companies.
I have never had much success with the search facility on this forum (using AND). However, if you type “route italy greece”, into it and ask to search on all terms, there are several other threads that discuss it.
At the risk of incurring the wrath of the moderator, there are two threads on another forum (that has the same search method and does appear to work) that discuss the Italy/Greece route….

I have been banned from that forum and have no interest in promoting it but they are useful threads.

HI may which way through ROmania did you come, the northen route the lorry route still has much roadworks on them, the southern routh through Timasora and Alexandra now only has 2, we made it from Provadia to Hungary in 12 hours,
The ferry via italy we have not done but 2 years ago cost 320E for a car and caravan so a friend told us,
You can also do romania crossing at Cenad a small boarder crossing and go to Calafat and ferry to Bulgaria then your not in Romania very long
Hope your trip is good,
hope this helps,
regards WIlola

Hi MAy
I have heard quite a few bad stories about going through Serbia.
I would not risk it myself.
Everyone that I know that has driven here, has gone through Romania. Takes about two hours more, but is much better.
When are you looking to be travelling?
The route planner on michellin is very good, and my husband has followed it many times, as well as alot of friends who have bought around us.
My friend is driving on 17th
If you need any help then let me know

Well, I disagree entirely.
I guess you could trawl through all the appropriate posts on all the forums about Bulgaria and do some sort of analysis but my hunch is that you will find that, disregarding those travellers that failed to get their green card before commencing their travels, more people are happy with the Serbia route than the Romania route. I think that it takes a different kind of traveller to take the Italy-Greece route and the same analysis will probably show them as being most happy overall.
The key to the Serbia route is to ensure that you have a green card before you leave.
