Enrolling British children in Norsk schools

Post Posted: Thu Aug 26, 2010 2:48 pm

Hi to everyone.

My wife and I are moving to Stavanger early next year and our biggest worry is enrolling the kids in school. We have 4 kids aged 8, 6, 2 and 11 months. Obviously different for the little ones but we are concerned about our 2 oldest girls' schooling. Has anyone had any experience with enrolling their little ones straight into a norwegian school before they know the language? Is it even possible to do this or are the international schools the only way to go? I would rather they were settled into a norwegian school as soon as possible but at the same point I don't want them to be too uncomfortable. Can anyone also help with information on how we actually go about the enrollment process? Any help and comments would be gratefully received

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum. I live in Stavanger and although I have no children of my own some of my English colleagues have been through exactly the same situation as yourself. To enroll the child straight into a state school is very straight forward, you just need to know which Kommune (area) you will be living in. My colleagues have said their children have had no difficulty at all adapting to the Norwegian school system and the language barrier was soon overcome, they will be teaching you in no time! If you know where your going to be living then send me a message and I will find out more regarding what schools are in the area.

Regards

Eamonn

Thanks for getting back to me Eammon. Sorry its taken me so long to reply but it has been a busy month. Not quite sure where we are going to live yet but our search is narrowed to Sandnes, Sola, Randaberg and Tananger. Will definitely give you a pm once things are further settled. Thanks again.
