Give me 5
Re: Give me 5

Another nice breakfast/brunch dish with eggs is melted/fried cheese w/an egg on top. Don't know the name for this in Turkish or English!
You need a nice shallow little stainless steel pan w/its own lid but any shallow pan will do w/a suitable lid.
Melt a knob of real butter in the pan and put in a couple of slices of white cheese. We don't want a hard cheddar here. Use a medium heat. Depending on its consistency, the cheese will melt or soften and maybe become a little crispy if it's a hard type cheese. When it seems as grilled as you like, break an egg, or two, over it. Keep the heat low to medium and cover w/the lid. The whites will set and the yolks remain nice and runny - takes a few minutes, you can keep checking and remove from the heat when the eggs are done as you like.
Serve in the pan w/plenty of nice fresh bread and a big mug of tea! Enjoy!
Individual Turkish frying pans are called sahan. The original ones were made of copper which is a good conductor of heat.

Finally two more egg dishes! The first one is w/spinach. The spinach is stewed in its own juices until done, some people like an onion chopped and fried in a little olive oil or butter then the veg added and stewed. When its all cooked as liked, make little nests or dents in the spinach and crack an egg into each nest ( as many as liked). Cover w/a lid and cook until done as preferred. Serve piping hot in the pan.
For our last egg dish, pide w/mince and an egg cracked over it is very popular! Might be high in cholesterol though!
Pide and lahmacun are Turkish type pizzas w/mince served w/fresh green leaves and sliced tomatoes. Plain cheese pide is available too. Nicer fast food than a lot of other types!

Ankara is in the centre of Anatolia and steeped in history which goes right back to the Bronze Age.
The founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, set up his headquarters for the nationalist movement in Ankara in the 1920s. After the War of Independence Ankara replaced Istanbul as the capital in 1923.
It’s the centre of the government and all the foreign embassies are there. It is surrounded by a vast agricultural area.
Places to visit:
Ankara Castle, used by the Byzantines and the Romans.
The old Turkish Parliament building, in the quarter called Ulus. Ataturk made his first speech to the members of parliament here.
Anitkabir, the mausoleum where Ataturk is buried. Very impressive architecture. There’s a museum here too.
Atakule, a huge shopping centre and tower. In the quarter called Cankaya.
There are many museums that deserve a visit- for eg the open air steam locomotive museum, the METU Science and Technology (museum on the campus of Middle East Technical University) and the Cengelhan Rahmi Koc Museum , includes industrial and technological artifacts from 1850 onwards- are just a few that are worth seeing.
Spring, summer or autumn are the best times to plan a trip to Ankara. The only thing missing is the sea!

Turkish cinema is flourishing at the present time. It's had its fair share of ups and downs but it's always been there- especially in the 1950s to1970s. So let's have a list of 5 TR films!
Happy New Year BTW! Iyi yillar!

1) Mr Muhsin ( Muhsin Bey)- a story about a middle aged music producer tries to help a young man fulfill his dream of becoming a famous folk singer, drama w/some comical moments.
2) The Bandit (Eskiya)- a legendary bandit serves 35 years in prison, on his release he finds his village has been submerged in water to make a dam. The country has changed drastically. He heads to Istanbul where he has lots of adventures.
3) I Saw the Sun (Gunesi Gordum) – The struggles of a poor family from the east of the country who are obliged to leave their village, some of them migrate to Istanbul and some go to Norway.
4) Lady (Hanim) – the adventures of a beautiful white cat, her owner and the owner’s unpleasant daughter. Note- I adopted a lovely little black and white street cat and named her Hanim, we had her for over 19 years and she gave us a lot of joy! She appreciated us too!
5) Don’t Let Them Shoot the Kite- (Ucurtmayi Vurmasinlar)- in TR female prisoners w/very young children often have the kids w/them while they serve their sentences. A young woman who kills a man in self defense makes friends w/the small son of another inmate.
These are just a few, others deserve a mention but we’ve chosen 5. I’ve seen them all and would see them again!
