owning a cafe / resterant / bar

Post Posted: Mon Jul 25, 2011 8:18 pm

we're thinking of living in Bulgaria full time but the wife wants a cafe based on good old british food ? do you think it could work and more to the point would you eat there. It's a big step to take as our youngest son would be giving up his army career to help build up the cafe/ restaurant. We are thinking of the Dobrich area or around Varna it's self. I would be very grateful for any thoughts that you might have on our idea and any advice that you can give would be greatly appreciated. and please call me Russ Smile

Hi there
You need to the research, to see if you have enough people wanting Brit food, but I think you would also have to look at serving some Bulgarian food too, you can't just aim at the expats in the region you choose.
If you go nearer to the coast, you will have much more competition, I don't live over Dobrich/Varna way so really can't tell you if it could work or not.
I know a family who opened a cafe/restaurant in Ravda resort, they are doing well, but they have local expats and tourists visiting them, they are now established and doing well, so it is possible, IF you are in the right area.

We are looking for a flight over there at the moment to check out a few other places and hopefully we will be able to speak to other expats who may allot more than us at present ! but we're learning

You would need to be right in the heart of a resort so do not think Dobrich would be the best place. Maybe right in Varna but then your costs are going to be high. There are already a number of such places, the ones that have survived and prospered were here from the start.

As you say it would cost alot more to set up in Varna and from what we've seen there they already have quite a few cafs/bars .We did go to Dobrich and we liked the look of the place and their doing it up nice, looks like are best bet so far ?

hi, when we visited in june to purchase our "little farm" we stayed in a hotel at golden sands , combining business and pleasure , a rather busy place but thats another story lol , but while we were there we came across a place called harry rumsdens, a great play on words, which sold english food and was always busy especially at breakfast time ! I know this was at a resort but i`m sure there is a call for english food but as anywhere good food will always sell, so good luck
