Does anyone know whether it is possible to avoid tolls when entering Portugal from Spain on the A22?

In other words, if we come across the bridge and take the first exit at Castro Marim then pick up the N125, will we have passed under a gantry?

Yes you can come over bridge and take first exit without incurring a toll.

The first toll is between J17 (Monte Gordo) and J16 (Tavira). If you're driving a foreign car you can pre-pay online, if you want.

Thanks MM.

Online prepayment is a new one on me Richard. Makes life a bit easier if we drive down in our UK car although my plan is to avoid SCUT toll roads altogether on principle.

Sorry to be a pain and resurrect this topic yet again. BUT, I thought it was worth mentioning the signposting and toll information of the A22 coming from Faro Airport.
If you are heading towards the west the only sign indicating a toll is actually on the slip road and a little obscured by the concrete supports to the motorway above. It gives little opportunity to change your mind, assuming you know what it is. I've taken photos of the signage and sent to my friends who may be travelling out later in the year. They wouldn't have a clue what it meant otherwise as it looks more like you are entering a radar monitoring zone.
I have just returned from a few days in Portugal and have heard many tales of the difficulties in paying tolls, mostly, having to pay previous users fees as well as one's own but also the inconsistency in them appearing on the system.
