Thanks for that Micas.

Seems like a very good marketing ploy but may not suit everyone. Coupled with the concerns from DECO and the implications it would seem that everyone should assess the total impact carefully. Remember, you are not saving 10%. You are merely spending that money with a different Company (because the money is put on your Continente Card).

Went to Continente to find out about the EDP 10% discount and this is what I understood.

-For now the offer is valid during 2012 only
-If you pay a fixed amount to EDP and adjust at the end of the year you will lose that. Invoices have to be paid monthly
-The 10% will only apply on the NORMAL tariff, not the bi-horário. It means you have to do your accounts to see if the 10% paid into your Continente card for shopping is worth losing the bi-horário. In others words, all your electricity will be charged at normal rates.

Don't know if it is worth the aggravation of changing the direct debit.

There are already talks about ending the bi-horário in the not too distant future.

True ,the Troika "suggested" that this be cancelled sometime this year
But this end they said on TV News would like to wait untill 2016 ?
As all things here it's to qoute "muddy"

With apologies for thread creep, I don't see quite why the Troika should have an input into whether the electricity price regulator (ERSE ?) fixes bi-horário tariffs or whether, subsequently, the de-regulated suppliers continue to offer them. I can see that the Troika might wish to increase liberalisation and de-regulation of electricity supply amongst other things.

The purpose of bi-horário and tri-horário tariffs are to encourage electricity consumption at times of low demand and discourage electricity consumption at times of peak demand with a benefit for all in greater efficiency of power generation. This ultimately reduces the risk of capital expenditure on expanding generating capacity due to smoother demand. Surely this is a good thing and these sorts of tariffs remain available in the UK some 30+ years after de-regulation.

Sod the thread creep Richard (we`ve really batted the offer thing around well enough, & anyway it was my thread….)

Agreeing with the smoothing demand/reducing generating capacity idea leaves me to wonder if the original principles have been overtaken by a plethora of independent supplies -sources AND geographies- not to more efficient, widely available and dispersed storage options? Way above my level of detail or investigative ability; but in any event we`re all left to hope that `they` know what they`re doing.

But it does bring us back to your first point.

Bearing in mind work and pain thus far in establishing principles of national sovereignty, freedoms of though, market forces, transparency et al you do question the whos and whys of present decision-making protocols. Particularly the seeming inability of close-horizon focussed, increasingly unelected `leaders` to make decisions that are not forever loading financial and quality of life costs on to the average punter.

(excessive) personal political pride(s)?
