I'd like to step in here to clarify that the negative tone you are referring too certainly does NOT reflect the official policy of this site - far from it. There are other sites where this is not the case, sites which have specifically been created in order to share negative expat experiences (a quick Google will usually find them) but that goal is as far removed from the aim of Expat Focus as it could possibly be.
With the above said, there are a collection of negative experiences collected in one or two threads in both the Australia and New Zealand forums and I strongly welcome the balance that you are able to bring to the arguments presented.

Let me just step in here and point out that New Zealand is in fact a south-eastern society.

I think that you should choose areas where the population is so colorful , so it would be easier for you and your family to live a normal life.
Good Luck!

How is 'winging pom' extremely racist. I didn't realise English were a race, thought they were Caucasians. I think this remark could be deemed as prejudice. You shouldn’t take this remark so personally, its just fun really. Its like calling Kiwi's sheep shaggers. Its just fun really. Anyhow I am a kiwi living in London (my fathers English), I had never heard the term Paki's since I came here.
I think it should be underlined that in NZ is not a very religious country, we don’t have a problem with extremist and terrorism, I don’t think it ever happened.
Kiwis are passionate about their sport and tend to like to rile their rivals in many sports particularly Rugby. They don’t seem to realise that Rugby is a small global sport hence why we can compete globally.
However living in Auckland I never noticed open racism. In fact in the 18 years working as Policeman in this city I don’t remember a single complaint, crimes or incident based on racism. In saying that sometimes Asian tourist were targeted for robberies. The reason for this is that they were easy targets in that they did fight back, took lots of times to report to Police & usually made poor witnesses due to language barriers and they are seldom able to give evidence as they leave the country- as tourists do, not because of dislike of their cultures.
In relation to not liking Americans because of the war, that's WW2, you would have to be over 70 to even remember the war and a lot of the population over this age are English immigrants anyway. More likely that if their are any resentment to Americans it may be many of the more recent wars Americans have been involved in. For example the majority of Kiwi including the Govt did not support America in Iraq, hence we have no troops there, in contrast to Australia.
Just my thoughts and observations

White NZers (outside auckland) are way more racist towards nationals of third world countries. I have witnessed this first hand. They are however somewhat forgiving of their local Maori population + Pacific islanders and are less racist towards them.

Oh for Heaven's sake.
Brits move to New Zealand and complain about racism, but New Zealanders move to the UK and find the society there to be too racist.
One of the main reasons people from the UK give for leaving their homeland is that it's being overrun with immigrants. If that's not racism I don't know what is.
If you are coming from Canada or the UK you are not going to find attitudes much different.
Like I said in the other thread, this is the most negative online expatriate community I have ever come across. There are people whose main aim seems to be to spread hate.
From my experiences living in Europe, Asia and Oceania, you will find New Zealand and Australia to be the most accepting societies of anywhere.
The problem people in ANY country have with immigrants is when new arrivals don't make an effort to fit into society. It doesn't make any difference what country you're in or what colour your skin is.
Racism exists everywhere but is DEFINITELY under better control in Western societies (like New Zealand's) than in other parts of the world where people practice it openly and it is widely accepted (try living in a place like Korea and you'll learn what racism is really all about). It is definitely not a major feature of New Zealand society.

Overall what you are saying has some weight. But from personal experience I believe that immigrants in NZ are less assimilated than Europe or North America. Auckland seemed to be doing well but the rest of the nation was a shock to me.
And yes, Brits have always left UK for a better lifestyle even when there were no immigrants here..... and thats how the modern Australia, NZ, USA, Canada and SA were formed. Overcrowding seems to be their current excuse to leave britain and no it is not racist.
This site is purely democratic and nowhere near negative about NZ than others that I have seen around. Actually there are now sites specifically dedicated to warning immigrants about not moving to NZ. for eg. expatexposed.com/
