Property and rental prices are very high in London and so your cost of living considerably increase.
Why not consider moving out into the countryside near a good rail and motorway link to the City. I live in South Warwickshire, near Warwick / Leamington which has a direct rail link to London every 30 minutes. I can drive to Heathrow Airport from here in just less than an hour, so you can imagine how quickly the train gets to London.
And property prices ..... you can get a semi here in the village for £150k and a 4 bedroom detatched with garage and gardens for £285k. Compare that to London! There are plenty of commuters living in the vilages around here doing the same thing!

I,m from India and have been working in IT for close to 6 yrs. I have travelled to US and China before on assignments. I have now been offered a post in an Investment Bank in Central London. The offer is software developer in a senior role and is close to 33,000 UK Pounds. Is this a good offer? I have heard living costs are vry high in London? My nett in-hand salary per month would be close to 2000 UK Pounds? How much would be the cost-of-living for living comfortably? Accomodation in East Hall for a couple, food, travel to Central London, Utilities, Council tax, any other costs??

Hi, I only just moved to the UK from the Netherlands and I find costs of living really high here. I am not living in London, but honestly, even for the South, your salary doe not sound impressive. I hope somebody replies to your request who knows more about the acutal costs of living but you should take into account that renting a place is really expensive. We rent a three bedroom house in the South for over 600 Pound, not including gas, water, energy or council tax. Just to give you an impression

Rent, Utilities and Council tax are really high all over the UK. I've never lived in London, but there are extra expenses for living there, like the Congestion Charge you have to pay for having a car in certain parts of London. However, you should also get an extra amount of money called the London Weighting Allowance in your salary...it might be worth asking if your £33 includes this or if it will be added on separately. TBH, it doesn't sound a huge amount for living in London.
Hope this helps.

Hi Nileshdias, have a look at www.jobsite.co.uk/
My hubby works in IT, not in your area - but i have to say for a senior role down south in an investment bank, and with your experience, that sounds at least 5K too short, if not 10K!
Like it has been mentioned before, the cost of living in London is pretty horrendous.
It depends on how much you want to move here and how much capital you have behind you already. If the salary of 33K is to be your only, or main source of income, you will be hard pushed to buy anywhere and long term rental doesn't seem to work out to be very beneficial in this country.
I doubt very much your family would be able to live comfortably on that salary in London - is there any other area of the UK you'd consider living/working or have seen opportunities in?

Hi guys,
I am also moving into London on a job that would be paying me about 40K (without benifits and bonus) annum. I will be the sole bread earner for the family of 2 members. Like Nilesh I would like to know if 40K would be good enough to surivie in London. I am also moving in from India and am working in the IT industry.
Warm regards,
Monty
