Climate and Weather
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuAntigua and Barbuda - Climate and Weather
The typical temperatures on Antigua are in the region of 24°C in January and with an average rainfall of 1.5 inches, the islands are also quite dry. October is one of the hottest months and also has the least amount of rain, with a minimum temperature of 25°C an average of 24 mm of precipitation. The excellent weather means that water sports are one of the main pastimes on the islands and most people indulge in diving or sailing.
The island has daily rain showers from mid-September to November and you are advised to carry some rain wear with you in case the sunshine is replaced with showers. The showers will come on suddenly and disappear just as quickly. The average rainfall during the wet season is 152 mm a month.
Weather in Antigua is on the whole very pleasant all year round, with hot and humid weather to the sudden rain storms that help cool you down. Light weight cotton clothing is also advised for you to wear to help keep you cool but remember that rain showers are not uncommon and you should be prepared for them if you visit during the wet season.
Hurricane season is June to September although there is also a chance of earth quakes and flash floods. The area is also prone to periods of drought during the dry season. The islands experience hurricanes frequently and most houses have been built to withstand the strongest winds.
The islands do not experience hot and cold seasons as in more temperate climates and this is due to the temperatures which do not fluctuate very much. The seasons are simply wet and dry and this is the differentiation between them. This ensures that the islands receive visitors all year round and it is an attractive destination for those who are looking for some sun during the cold winters experienced by other countries or those who are looking for a more permanent home in a sunnier climate.
There is an average of 8 hours of sunshine each day, and even more during the dry season. Antigua and Barbuda are amongst the driest of the Caribbean islands in spite of the hurricanes.
