Leisure, Entertainment and Sport

Antigua and Barbuda - Leisure, Entertainment and Sport

Some of the major leisure activities on Antigua are golf, diving and of course, sailing. In fact the waters around Antigua offer some of the best yachting in the Caribbean. Some hotels or guest houses may offer sail boats for hire, or you could try one of the local rental agencies. If you don't feel like sailing, you might want to try out windsurfing at Dickenson Bay which is the hub for all windsurfing on Antigua.

If you are interested in diving Antigua and Barbuda offer a very good shelf diving experience and both have a selection of wrecks for you to explore.

Golfing on Antigua is a must if you enjoy the sport, the 18 hole par 70 course at Cedar Valley and the Jolly Harbour Course are the only two courses on the island but there is a 9 hole golf course at the K-Club on Barbuda. Rates for playing golf vary depending on your membership status. If you have left your clubs at home you can also take advantage of the rental equipment offered at the courses.

Green fees start from as little as $30 (USD) at the Cedar Valley for 18 holes and $40 (USD) at Jolly Harbour. You may be wise to take out a month's membership if you intend to play a lot of golf during your stay on Antigua as this allows you to play without paying green fees. If you choose to take a membership at the Jolly Harbour the cost is $180 (USD).

Another popular sport on Antigua is cricket, which is played on any empty piece of land. The Antigua Recreation Ground is probably the one of the greatest and finest places to watch the game being played. Beach cricket is very popular on Antigua also and can be always be found at Dickinson Bay and Fryes Beach where you can find young and old Antiguans playing.

Places you might like to visit include the Shirley Heights which is a selection of old gun emplacements high above English harbour and which offers an excellent view. On Sunday afternoons there is a Barbecue and reggae music and of course Rum punch.

Another popular attraction on the island is the Sea View Farm Village where you can see Antiguan pottery being fired from clay collected at nearby pits. There is also a farm shop where items can be purchased for you to take home. The pottery tends to break in cold climates so please take this into consideration before deciding to purchase an expensive piece of pottery.

The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda is a fascinating place to visit, telling the tale of how the island was created through to modern history and provides an interesting day out for all the family.
