Expats are able to take their pets to Argentina if they choose but there are a series of regulations which must be adhered to. Argentina joined the EU Pets Travel Scheme in 2005, meaning that animals can travel between qualifying countries with the required documentation relatively easily.

Owners must obtain a certificate of good health, to show that the animal(s) has been examined within the period of ten days prior to travel and showed no signs of any disease or illness. The Argentine embassy in your home country can provide you with the necessary paperwork which must be completed by the vet when he/she examines the animal. This is to give as much detail on the animal and its state of health as possible. Certification will also be required to show that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies and a number of other illnesses. However, the 3-year rabies vaccine is not recognised by Argentina.

If the pet meets all the requirements then it will not be subject to quarantine regulations. If there is any doubt then the animal will be quarantined. Pets which are being brought in from parts of Asia and Africa must have clearance from the SENASA, the Argentine quarantine department.

Some airlines will allow a small animal such as a cat or a small dog to travel in the cabin with you, but others will insist on it being transported in the luggage hold while some will not take animals at all. If making arrangements for the transportation of animals into Argentina, check with your airline as far in advance as possible, so that you have time to make alternative arrangements if required. If the airline does allow the pet to travel with you, you may be required to use their own pet carriers, which may incur a fee.

The airline will inform the airport in Argentina so that a qualified official is there to check the paperwork. A small tax will be payable on arrival, but the amount will depend on the animal and the day and time of arrival. Your airline or the Argentine embassy in your home country should be able to provide more detailed information on this payment.

Veterinary care is readily available in Argentina, particularly in the cities. Many of the vets have studied abroad so it is fairly easy to find an English speaking vet. Pet food and other supplies are readily available in the cities and owners should have no trouble finding what they need.
