Getting There

Austria - Getting There

Austria's main international airport, served by more than 80 airlines, is Flughafen Wien Schwechat, 19 km east of Vienna. Austria has three national airlines: Austrian Airlines, Austrian Arrows and Lauda Air, which are all owned by the same company, and operate routes to many international destinations.

There are also international airports at Linz, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, Graz and Innsbruck, and many low-cost European carriers fly into these regional airports.

Approximate flight times to Vienna are around 2 hours from London, 9 hours from New York, and 25 hours from Sydney.

Vienna is the hub of central European rail travel, and has excellent connections with all major European cities. Train services are generally fast and efficient.

Austria also has a very good road network, with well-maintained motorways (Autobahnen) connecting it with surrounding countries. The main border points are open 24 hours a day, but tend to become very congested during holiday times. There are tolls payable for using Austria's highways.

During spring and summer it is also possible to travel on the Danube to Vienna on fast hydrofoil services from Bratislava and Budapest, and on considerably slower steamers from the German town of Passau.
