The unit of currency in Germany is the Euro (EUR), made up of 100 cents. EUR1 is equivalent to GBP0.67 and US$1.29 in November 2006.

Notes come in denominations of EUR500, EUR200, EUR100, EUR50, EUR20, EUR10 and EUR5, while coins are in denominations of EUR2, EUR1 and 50, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.

The cost of living is fairly high in Austria, although it is similar to other Western European countries. Accommodation and restaurant prices are cheaper in rural areas and small towns than in the cities and tourist areas.

Tipping is widely practised in Austria, where it is customary to tip around 10% of the bill in restaurants, bars, cafes and hair salons, and to tip taxi drivers a similar percentage of the fare. It is also normal to tip porters, cloakroom attendants etc. with small change.
