Getting There

The Bahamas - Getting There

The Bahamas has several international airports. One is situated at Nassau on New Providence Island, another is at Freeport on Grand Bahama Island and there is a smaller airport at George Town on Exuma Island. This makes it a relatively easy destination to reach; particularly as a number of the world’s largest airlines operate services in and out of the country.

Lynden Pindling International Airport is Nassau’s airport and British Airways, Air Canada and Air Jamaica all run regular services there, as well as a number of large airlines from the United States. The international airport at Freeport on Grand Bahama is a private airport which is served mainly by flights from the United States as well as internal flights. Exuma’s airport is public and also deals mainly with flights from the US and domestic flights, although some airlines operate only seasonal services there.

A direct flight from London can take around nine and a half hours, while it is only one hour from Florida and three hours from Toronto. Flights from other major European cities usually involve a connecting flight, either through London or Miami. Some of the world’s major airports will have flights directly to the Bahamas but if you are arriving from a country which does not then it may be necessary to fly into Florida and take a connecting flight, although as some islands are relatively close to the Florida coast then travellers can also consider taking a ferry. Boats regularly run from Fort Lauderdale to Lucayan Harbour on Grand Bahama Island.

The Bahamas has its own airline called Bahamasair which has some domestic flights for travelling between the islands as well as international flights. Flights with Bahamasair tend to operate on what is known as ‘island time’ and are often subject to cancellation and delays, and are perhaps not the best option for those in a hurry. Travelling between islands is usually done by boat or light aircraft and there are regular ferries from Nassau to some of the other islands as well as smaller ferry companies which operate from various islands. There are also private boats and aircraft which can be hired for journeys between islands.

Visitors from some countries may find that they do not need a passport to visit the Bahamas, but this depends greatly on the length of stay. Your airline will be able to clarify details on documentation requirements when you book your ticket.
