Climate and Weather

The Bahamas - Climate and Weather

The location of the Bahamas means that it has a slightly cooler climate than the rest of the Caribbean as it is close to the cold air systems of North America, though it is still considered to be tropical. The Bahamas consists of over 700 islands and the further south the island is the hotter and drier the weather becomes, although it is estimated that most of the islands will have an average of over 300 days of sunshine each year.

The country does experience a rainy season which stretches from May to October with an average monthly rainfall of around seven or eight inches, though in the winter this drops to an average of three inches per month. Rain tends to fall in short but heavy showers and is usually accompanied by strong winds. This rainy season – and the possibility of a hurricane – is the reason why most people choose to visit during the winter months.

Hurricanes are not uncommon in the area and occur mainly between June and November, though they are more likely in the latter half of the season. The larger houses of the wealthy are better able to withstand the effects of a hurricane as they tend to be made from concrete block and it is usually the lighter houses made from wood which will sustain the greatest damage. The use of modern technology for tracking and predicting hurricanes means that most inhabitants will be able to prepare themselves and their property in plenty of time. Winds outside of the hurricane season are not usually stronger than about 25 miles per hour.

The islands rarely experience low temperatures, even in winter, and average summer temperatures are around 27°C. There are just two seasons, winter and summer. Spring and summer do not really take place in the Bahamas, as the fluctuations in temperature do not happen as they would further north. Snow has not been reported in the area since 1977.

The average amount of sunshine each day does not differ much from season to season. Winter days are usually 7-8 hours a day and summer days average 8 or 9 hours. The summer months can also see levels of humidity reach as high as 80%.

The weather and climate of the Bahamas make it a very popular destination for holidaymakers all year round and it is ideal for those looking for a more permanent move to sunnier climes.
