Crime and Safety

The Bahamas - Crime and Safety

The rate of criminal activity in the Bahamas is high, especially in such areas as New Providence Island as well as Nassau and the surrounding areas. Crimes against tourists in these areas include pickpocketing and theft, although in recent years the number of violent crimes has risen though visitors should be aware that most violent crime takes place among locals. Crime rates are not as high on some of the smaller islands.

Visitors are encouraged to be on their guard around hotels, casinos and cruise ships, as the number of cases of sexual assault have increased. Young girls in particular are encouraged to be especially vigilant, as there have been incidents of verbal harassment and unwanted attention. The 2007 United Nations crime report states that the Bahamas has the highest reported number of rapes in the Caribbean.

There have been numerous reports of drinks being spiked and locals pretending to be taxi drivers and then assaulting and robbing their victims. Tourists are advised to take special note of the licence plates of any taxis they use.

Travellers should avoid isolated areas, such as deserted beaches and situations where they are alone with strangers. Tourists staying in hotels should put their valuables such as passports, credit cards and any cash in the hotel safes, and always make sure that their room doors are locked at all times. Parents should also be aware that it is very easy for under age teenagers to access alcohol as enforcement of the drinking age is weak.

Should you fall victim to crime whilst visiting in the Bahamas, you are urged to contact the Royal Bahamas Police Force as soon as possible. Early reports improve the likelihood of suspects being identified and apprehended. The Royal Bahamas Police Force takes the threat of crimes against tourists very seriously, but on occasion the response to reports of crime may be slow due to the geography of the islands.

In addition to contacting the local police, victims are encouraged to contact their countries nearest Embassy or Consulate. Staff of your Embassy/Consulate will assist you in finding appropriate medical care, help in contacting members of family, explain how funds could be transferred and they will also help you understand the local criminal justice system and how to find a lawyer if one is required.

The number to dial for emergency assistance is 911 or 919 and those who commit crimes will find that the penalties are harsher than in many other countries.
