Healthcare and Medical Treatment

The Bahamas - Healthcare and Medical Treatment

The standard of healthcare in the Bahamas is generally excellent. There are a number of well-equipped hospitals which are staffed by highly trained medical professionals, though there are some conditions for which it would be necessary for the patient to be taken to the US for treatment.

There are a number of hospitals on the islands including the Doctors Hospital at Nassau which offers private healthcare for both inpatients and outpatients. It is equipped with the latest technology and has an intensive care unit, a number of laboratories and an operating suite. The staff can deal with almost every medical condition and the 72 rooms are air-conditioned and have satellite television and internet access. The hospital also has an emergency room which is open continually. The Princess Margaret hospital is a public facility which can accommodate over 400 patients and includes paediatric and maternity units. It is a teaching hospital which can deal with many different conditions.

Those taking up residence on some of the smaller islands may find that their hospital facilities amount to walk-in clinics which are open one or two days a week. Some islands have formed their own emergency response service, staffed by volunteers, to administer emergency medical treatment and transport the patient to the nearest hospital if required. As medical care must be paid for it is advisable to obtain medical insurance and there are a number of companies that supply insurance policies, though you will find that you must make immediate cash payments to the facility and claim them back from the insurance company. A private health care plan is considered to be a must for those who are planning to live in the Bahamas long term.

There are some vaccinations which are recommended for those travelling to the Bahamas. Those from countries which have a problem with yellow fever must have documentation to show they are vaccinated. Protection against Hepatitis A is advised as is malaria, but that is dependent upon the island being visited.

There is no shortage of medication in the country but if you require prescription medications on a regular basis it is a good idea to check in advance to ensure that your medication will be available in the Bahamas, as there are certain drugs which cannot be sold there. If your medication is not available you should consult your doctor prior to travelling to discuss alternatives.

If you require emergency medical assistance the number to call is 911 or 919, although if you have private healthcare insurance you may have access to a private ambulance service and should dial their number.
