Getting There

Bahrain - Getting There

Bahrain has an international airport situated just outside Manama and has regular flights to other countries in the Persian Gulf as well as flights to other continents, with international flights totally 50 per day. The national airline is Gulf Air and it runs services to a number of other countries. Other airlines which regularly fly to Bahrain include British Airways, Lufthansa and Saudi Arabian Airlines among others. Flights from Europe are daily and if travelling during the cooler winter months the fares are less expensive. Those travelling from the United States and Asia should also find that there are frequent flights.

It takes just over seven hours to fly from London to Bahrain, approximately 18 hours from Los Angeles and just over 13 hours from New York. The airport at Manama is modern and offers duty-free shopping, banking and restaurant facilities and there are plans for expansion in line with the increasing number of flights each year. There are regular bus services from the airport into the capital city or travellers may choose to take a taxi. The journey time into Manama is just 15 minutes.

There is only one land connection with another country and that is the causeway which runs between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Foreigners in hire cars are not permitted to use the causeway, but those who are resident in Saudi Arabia and who have their own cars may use the crossing if they have car insurance which is valid in both countries. Those who reach the border and do not have the relevant insurance may purchase it there. Travellers using the causeway must also have a transit visa which is issued in Saudi Arabia.

Another way across the causeway is to take the bus. Regular services are run between Manama and Dammam in Saudi Arabia and operate several times a day. The journey between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia can take up to 90 minutes. A causeway is also planned between Bahrain and Qatar.

There is a ferry service which runs regularly between the capital city of Manama and Bushehr in Iran. The ferry fares are reasonable and usually include the cost of meals. There are several ferry ports in Bahrain and the average journey time to and from Iran is around 16 hours. There are some plans to revive ferry services to other countries.

For those who need to travel to one of the other islands once they have arrived in the country there are regular local ferry services.
