The official language of Bahrain is Arabic but English is also widely used. English is often used as a business language there and it is compulsory for school children in Bahrain to learn English as a second language.

Those moving to Bahrain will find that the modern Arabic used will have different dialects which vary from area to area and that other languages such as Urdu and Farsi are common among immigrants from India and Iran.

It is relatively easy to get by without learning English as so many of the inhabitants are familiar with it. There are English language newspapers, although television and radio stations tend to broadcast in Arabic and workers in shops will be able to communicate in English. Some western companies will use English as the everyday language in the workplace and you may find yourself surrounded by colleagues who have English as their first language.

It is a good idea to learn at least a little of the local language as it is very satisfying to be able to communicate with those of other countries in their own language. If you move to Bahrain for work and your job requires that you use Arabic then courses may be provided by your company, although there are always classes on offer in more urban areas. It is always a good idea to try to learn at least a little before you travel as this may help you to settle and integrate when you arrive.

Tuition can be undertaken in a number of forms. One of the best ways to learn any language is to do so in a group, where all the students can support each other and practise together. This may not be the best option for those who are a little more self conscious or who may have been out of education for a little while. Hiring a private tutor is another option and offers intensive tuition which is very beneficial. With the internet options for learning are widened and many people now choose to learn languages online.

Arabic is perhaps not a straightforward language to learn but with a little determination most people will be able to pick up enough to have a basic conversation in a shop or restaurant. Practise is very important given that the alphabet is a different script to western languages and this can put people off, but a little study will help a great deal.
