Crime and Safety
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuBarbados - Crime and Safety
Barbados has started branches of neighbourhood watch as well as the start of a Crime Stoppers scheme. However, there are a number of dangers of which tourists and other visitors need to be aware. It is advisable to keep all valuables in a safe place – there is a danger when walking about with large amounts of cash or wearing expensive jewellery. It is also a good idea to avoid walking alone in under populated areas and on the beach at night. There have been some cases of rape reported by tourists and it is recommended that all visitors keep their accommodation securely locked at all times. Some apartments and villas have bars on the windows which is a good idea for those people who are thinking of building their own properties.
There is some talk in the free press in Barbados that there has been a cover up of serious offences that have occurred against tourists and the authorities have been accused of not investigating certain crimes properly.
It is a good idea to keep a copy of your passport separate from the actual passport. In the event of any of your documentation being lost or stolen you will need to inform both the police and the Consulate of your country. Also if you are involved in a robbery or theft it is a good idea to contact the consulate as they may be able to offer you advice and point you in the right direction if you require legal assistance.
The police and courts system is run in the same way as the British system. Should you need to call them the numbers for the emergency services are 211 for the police, 31 for the fire service and 511 if you should need an ambulance, although visitors should be aware that the response is not particularly quick.
There is very little risk of terrorism in Barbados although the airport security is as strict as any other airport especially those in proximity to the USA. Check-in times are the same as in other parts of the world so plenty of time should be allowed for security checks.
