Taking Your Pets
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuBarbados - Taking Your Pets
Dogs and cats have to be free of any communicable disease and can be imported by permit directly from the UK, Ireland, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St, Lucia and St. Vincent. Animals from other countries must spend 6 months in quarantine after which time they can get an import permit.
Under the PETS scheme you will need to have your pet micro chipped – a simple process that leaves a small device about the size of a grain of rice under the skin – and the animal needs to be injected against rabies as well as having all the other injections that are normal for pets . Once these are done the vet will issue a passport which must be kept up to date or the animal will have to go into quarantine the next time you want to travel abroad.
It is necessary for your pet to travel by an approved route with an approved carrier and when returning to the UK they will need a certificate proving that they are free from parasites. It is essential that you have all the correct paperwork in place before leaving the country.
To make sure that your dog or cat is not carrying rabies their vaccinations need to be kept up to date. All animals must have blood tests before travelling and this must be done by a registered vet. Treatment for parasites is also essential and must be done not less than 24 hrs and not more than 48 hours before travelling. It is also vital that you have medical insurance for your pet.
When travelling with your pet it is a good idea to give them a light meal a couple of hours before travelling and make sure that they have been toileted. The carrier should be a good size (the airlines or your vet can advise you on this) and should contain some food and water for the journey as well as a familiar smelling cushion for comfort.
There are veterinary services on Barbados and the lack of a language barrier means it should be fairly easy to find good care for your pet. Some branded pet foods are imported into the country so finding supplies should also be straightforward.
