Getting There

Belize - Getting There

The main airport of Belize is the Philip S W Goldson International Airport, also known by the international airport code BZE. The airport is located 16km north west of Belize city and if you choose to use a local taxi service to travel to the city instead of using the airport bus you should agree the fare price before you commence the journey. It is worth noting that the bus service runs infrequently and should not be relied upon.

The airlines that operate in and out of Belize are American Airlines flying from Miami and Dallas, Delta Air flying from Atlanta and US Airways which has a service from Charlottesville in North Carolina. There is also Continental Airlines flying from Houston. The flight time from Miami to BZE is 2 hours and from Houston it is 2 hours and 40 minutes.

There are no direct flights available from the UK to Belize, so if you are travelling from the UK you must take a flight to Atlanta, Miami or Houston and join the connecting onward flight to Belize.

Make a note that when you leave Belize by air you will be liable to a departure tax of $36 (US). This should be included in the price of your airline ticket.

The other routes into Belize are via cruise liners which anchor just off Belize City. They have regular scheduled boats that can carry passengers ashore mostly choosing to visit the Fort St Tourism Village. Most Caribbean and Panama Canal cruises will offer this stop.

There are also regular water taxi services between Punta Gorda and Puerto Barrios, Guatemala and also a twice weekly service from Livingston. Water taxis also run between Punta Gorda and Puerto Cortes, Honduras. Once again there is a departure tax if you are leaving by sea, which is payable in US or BZ Dollars. The amount payable is US $3.75 and BZ $7.50.

The road links with Belize include amongst others Chetumal which is on the Mexican border and Melchor de Mencos in Guatemala. Regular buses serve these routes and they leave every half an hour for Belize City. It is also easy to enter Belize from US border cities via Chetumal, Mexico city and Cancun. If you plan to enter Belize from Mexico or Guatemala via car you must obtain a temporary importation permit at the border. These are valid for one month and the driver must show all travel documents including insurance paperwork and proof of car ownership or the rental documentation.
