Leisure, Entertainment and Sport

Belize - Leisure, Entertainment and Sport

Belize is famous for its water sports and attracts many visitors each year who wish to take part in sailing, diving or fishing. Diving is by far the main attraction, as Belize is home to the second largest coral reef in the world which is 150 miles in length. The coastline also has many small uninhabited islands which have their own coral reefs and there are some which regularly play host to diving conventions. Divers should be aware that there are protection measures in place for the coral reefs and turtles, and any ship wrecks along the coastline are also protected by the government.

Other popular sports include windsurfing along the coast and kayaking on the rivers. Belize is home to a growing industry of adventure holidays and there are many societies and clubs that expats can join if they are interested in taking part in any of these sports. Ambergris Caye just off the coast of the country has a championship level golf course available for all to use and which has been designed carefully to fit in with the surroundings and avoid damage to the environment.

Many visitors take in the Lamanai Archaeological Site in the northern part of the country. The history of the site dates back to 1500BC and it is one of the oldest Mayan sites in Central America. There are temples and museum exhibits which can be viewed throughout the year.

There are a number of fine restaurants in Belize which offer a variety of cuisines, although the speciality of most, especially along the coast and on the cayes, is seafood. Diners are able to smoke in restaurants though most will have a designated area for this.

Nightclubs tend to be concentrated in more tourist areas and resorts. There are several on the cayes which attract foreign visitors but in the residential parts of the towns there is little in the way of nightlife. There are a number of bars which are comfortable and friendly for an evening drink.

The geography of the country means that it is home to a number of exotic wild birds and there are people who regularly make the trips to go birdwatching as well as spotting other types of wildlife. There are nature reserves where there are facilities for observing animals in their own habitat and these are monitored carefully to ensure that the birds and other animals are protected.
