Crime and Safety

Brunei - Crime and Safety

Crime is a medium risk in Brunei and crimes against expatriates are fairly uncommon and are normally non violent and opportunist. The most important thing to remember is that you should keep your possessions safe whether you are moving about or in your home. As Brunei it is a Moslem country it is advisable to be aware of the dos and don’ts before you arrive. The country has strict rules about alcohol as well as drugs and the repercussions of abusing these rules can be harsh.

Expatriates are allowed to import small amounts of alcohol for their personal use but it is unwise to try and import more than the allowance, as the consequences of being found with drugs could result in the death penalty. The police carry out regular stops to search cars for drugs and alcohol. Another concern is public displays of affection which can result in prison sentences for those concerned and the consequences will be worse if a Moslem is involved. In a similar vein prostitution is also illegal. Many of these offences can result in long prison sentences or even removal from the country.

Insulting the royal family of Brunei is another offence and newcomers are advised to be careful with their opinions until they become accustomed to the rules of the country. It is advisable to carry your passport with you at all times and to keep your valuables out of sight. When driving at night it is advisable to have someone in the car with you and to park away from quiet areas. Always make sure you lock your vehicle when you leave it.

The importing and possession of firearms is an offence as is the possession of explosives and as with possession of drugs could result in the death penalty, and gambling is also illegal. There is not a lot of credit card fraud but as with most places it s advisable to be vigilant when using an ATM. However there are few threats of security threats in Beirut.

If you should need to contact the police the number is 993. Foreigners who are staying in the country should also ensure that they have the number of their local embassy with them at all times in case they should require support during a police investigation.

The risks of terrorist activity in Brunei are fairly high, following several attacks in Indonesia in recent years. Visitors are advised to be vigilant.
