Healthcare and Medical Treatment
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuBrunei - Healthcare and Medical Treatment
The Flying Medical Services division is responsible for air lifting any citizens who require emergency medical assistance to the nearest hospital if they live in remote rural villages. The government has also been known to take care of the expense of sending citizens abroad for any special medical treatments.
The government in Brunei is continuously working to keep improving the health of its citizens and government funding for health care is considered to be an important investment in the country’s future.
The investment is a direct result of the oil wealth in Brunei and the government is able to provide the nation with one the best health care systems in Asia. Due to the standard and efficiency of this system, malaria is now non-existent and diseases such as cholera have virtually been eradicated.
For those who prefer private health care there are efficient private hospitals. There are institutes such as the Jerudong Park Medical Centre which has an excellent reputation.
All medical students have to attend university overseas as there are no medical schools in the country. This does look set to change though, as Brunei is beginning to create facilities for training its own nurses and doctors.
The National Health Policy is handled by the Ministry of Health. It has been designed to provide the people of Brunei with the highest level of health care that is cost effective as well as providing a high quality of life for the entire population in a clean and healthy environment.
In order to achieve the target of a high standard of health for all, emphasis is on the development of a medical care system based on primary health care. The main priorities are providing a wide range of support services to help prevent as well as treat illness and which will meet the needs of the population.
