Getting There

Bulgaria - Getting There

Bulgaria's main international airport is Sofia Airport, located about 10 km to the east of the city. There are also international airports at Varna, Plovdiv and Burgas. The national airline is Balkan Airlines, which operates routes to Bulgaria from many European, North American and Asian cities. Many other national airlines have scheduled flights to Bulgaria, including a number of European low-cost airlines, and there are also many charter flights from Western Europe. Approximate flight times to Sofia are three hours from London and fourteen hours from New York.

It is possible to travel into Bulgaria by road from all neighbouring countries. Foreign nationals entering by road are required to have documentation proving ownership of the vehicle and valid motor insurance; temporary visitors are asked to provide information on their exit route from the country and will be required to pay a road tax. There are passenger bus services to Sofia from many major European cities.

Bulgaria has direct rail services connecting Sofia to cities throughout Western Europe including Budapest, Bucharest, Istanbul, Paris, Vienna and Berlin.

Bulgaria's main ports are at Burgas and Varna.
