In most parts of Canada there is a choice of telephone service providers. The largest companies include Telus, Fido, and Videotron. For a new phone line, you will normally be asked to pay a connection fee of around $200 and a refundable deposit, often around $50. Typical line rental charges are around $25 per month, including free local calls. Most of the major telephone companies also provide high speed internet services using ADSL.

Mobile phones are widely used in Canada and there are a large number of mobile phone network providers including Bell Mobility, Telus and Rogers Wireless. It is important to check the coverage when selecting a provider as this varies. Some remote rural areas have no coverage at all. Mobile phones from outside North America may not work in Canada due to different band frequencies.

Postal services are provided by Canada post or by private companies in some areas, and services are generally reliable but not particularly fast. All mail sent to destinations outside North America is sent by air. Postage stamps can be bought in many local stores and from vending machines as well as in post offices. Post office opening hours are normally from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturdays, but these vary between different areas.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is the national television and radio broadcaster which transmits programmes in English and French. There are two national TV channels, and a number of commercial networks. Cable and satellite services are also widely available. No TV licence is required in Canada.
