One of the main destinations is Vancouver and a number of surveys in recent years have named Vancouver as the best city in the world for quality of life. This is based on a number of factors including quality of housing, education, climate, culture and infrastructure. Vancouver is popular with those who have families as there are plenty of parks and quiet neighbourhoods. The city is a favoured destination for expats from all over the world so those who choose Vancouver will come into contact with many different cultures. For those who want to enjoy an active lifestyle Vancouver offers many outdoor sports and activities such as skiing, golf, hiking, sailing and cycling. The city also has a wide variety of cultural attractions and as there are new property developments in progress all the time there are plenty of options when it comes to a new home. The cost of living is higher in Vancouver than in many other cities in Canada but there are also more opportunities for employment. Work opportunities range from the financial sector to the film industry.
Calgary is a fairly small city when compared to Toronto or Vancouver but features such as a very low rate of unemployment and many work opportunities are attracting large numbers of expats each year. Those who work in the oil industry will find that there are many vacancies in the area. In addition to this the rates of taxation are lower than in other areas. Property prices in the area have remained steady in recent years although this is expected to change with the large influx of expats. Many people will not enjoy the long winters and may find it remote when compared to other cities but it does have everything you need for everyday living, and if you are a fan of winter sports it is a good place to be.
The capital of Canada is Ottawa and it is one of the largest cities in the country. When compared with other cities the expat population is not as large, but there are steady numbers of expats choosing to make their home there. The climate may put some people off as the temperatures can be high in the summer and extremely low in the winter but the city has other attractions such as reasonable property prices and work opportunities. Positions are available in one of the many technology companies which have chosen to base itself in Ottawa and there are also work opportunities at the many government departments.
Far fewer people choose to move north and base themselves in remote areas but some do. This is usually for those who do not mind harsh winters and a fairly basic lifestyle. Expats who make their homes in the cities tend not to all live in the same areas. Areas such as Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia are ideal for those who want a quieter lifestyle and community living. The Canadians are very welcoming to expats and integrating into the community is fairly easy if you want to make friends. Most cities have expat groups to help you to settle and meet new people.
