Driving and Public Transport

Cayman Islands - Driving and Public Transport

There is a public transport system of mini buses and taxis for hire on Grand Cayman, but when you get outside of George Town the availability of taxis diminishes. Taxis will take you anywhere you want to go on Grand Cayman, but many visitors prefer to rent their own car for transportation. On the smaller islands, driving a car or motorcycle may be your only practical option. Because the Islands are small (the largest is 100 sq. miles) you can traverse them in a little over an hour by car.

Driving is on the left-hand side of the road, British style, in The Cayman Islands. That can be daunting for those not experienced in left-side driving, but otherwise driving in the Caymans is relatively safe and easy. The road system is one of the best in the Caribbean. All major roads are paved and are illuminated at night.

Duty on imported personal cars ranges between 25-40% depending on the vehicle's cash value. You can purchase good used cars or new cars on the Cayman Islands, and expect to pay a bit more than you would pay in the USA. To learn about regulations regarding car ownership and registration, vehicle inspection, insurance, and driver's licenses, contact the British National Tourist Organization or an embassy or consulate office.

Rental cars are available at hotels and airports. Motorcycles and scooters are also available to rent, and can be a fun alternative. You can also rent bicycles, and the islands are relatively flat so cycling is not difficult. If you plan to rent, be aware that during peak tourist season there is a big demand and you may have to reserve your vehicle months in advance.

Some car rental companies offer autos with either right or left side steering wheels, and if you ask they will reserve whichever suits you best. A provisional driving permit is required in order to drive in the Cayman Islands. A permit will be issued when you rent a vehicle and is valid until you leave the Islands or for six months. You will have to have a valid driver's license from your place of origin and be 21 or over or meet whatever other age requirements are mandated by the rental agency.

A ferry runs back and forth between North Sound and Rum Point on Grand Cayman. It is about a 45 minute trip each way. Private boats are available for charter, and can take you just about anywhere you want to go, for a price, but there is no public ferry from Grand Cayman to the other islands. Most people get to the smaller islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman by air, and two or more flights per hour are offered during the day. To fly from Cayman Brac to Little Cayman, a distance of about 10 miles, takes less than 10 minutes. To take a chartered boat costs about CI$20 each way.
