Healthcare and Medical Treatment

Cayman Islands - Healthcare and Medical Treatment

High standards of both general and specialized healthcare are available, and law requires all Cayman Island residents to maintain a minimum of basic health and medical insurance with a reputable insurance provider. Employers must provide health insurance and pay half of the cost.

There are both government-run and private medical centers on the islands, including two hospitals, and the government contracts with hospitals in Florida and the West Indies for such things as long-term care. A wide range of physicians and specialists, dentists, and optometrists serve the Caymans through private clinics. Air ambulance service to Miami is available through some two dozen providers, and transportation can normally be arranged within two hours. A hyperbaric chamber is available in the Caymans, thanks to the popularity of underwater diving sports.

The Public Health Department provides community-based health care services via Health Centers in each of the districts. These are staffed by physicians, a public health officer, social workers, a nutritionist, a pharmacist, a mental health nurse, psychological counselors and visiting specialists. Mental health services are provided in a comprehensive, community-based fashion. Services are delivered via visits to homes, prisons, geriatric and day-care facilities and district health centers.

The Health Department also offers programs for immunization and nutrition. There is a free immunization program for all resident children and an early warning system run by the health department to detect communicable diseases. Food is inspected at the port of entry and those who operate restaurants and other vending facilities for food must pass rigid health inspections on an annual basis. The quality of drinking water is routinely monitored.
