Very few people in China speak English, and it will be help expatriates living in China if they can learn at least a little of the Chinese dialect spoken in their region of residence. There are Chinese language schools in the main cities, some of which offer evening classes.
Each region in China has its own spoken language though the same written Chinese is used throughout China.
