Leisure, Entertainment and Sports

China - Leisure, Entertainment and Sports

In the largest urban centres such as Shanghai and Beijing, there are cinemas showing films in English, and it is possible to attend concerts, opera and ballet, as performances are often held in theatres and larger hotels. There are also many bars, restaurants and hotels where western pop music is performed.

Expats in China have also created their own entertainment by forming professional, social and sports clubs, and in the main cities there are a very diverse range to suit all tastes. Some modern apartment complexes have swimming pools and gyms, and it is also possible to join the health clubs of some of the big hotels and enjoy their sports facilities. Golf is a popular pastime, and international-standard golf courses are available.

At weekends and holiday times, expatriates often choose to venture outside their city of residence and explore more rural areas. Any popular destinations which can be reached easily by public transport are usually very crowded with Chinese people at these times, however.
