When we embark on a relocation to a new country there is so much to do, and so much to learn. Most of us would describe the transition and adjustment to living in a new country as exciting, tiring, AND stressful! It is so easy for everything and everyone else to become a priority and so we forget about ourselves. When we are tired and feeling stressed it is even more important to check in with ourselves to see how we are doing. In our hearts we know that to be our best - for others too - we must take care of ourselves first.
The Solution
CHECK IN WITH YOURSELF AND MAKE TIME FOR YOU
Of course, stress happens in life in general too, so no matter where you are in your overseas journey, I want you all to take a few moments and reflect on these tips.
Val's Tips for CHECKING IN WITH YOURSELF!
1. Take 3 deep breaths right now...stretch your hands above your head...now move your feet. Does this feel good? It only takes a minute or two to bring attention to your breath and body. I have a "post it" note on my computer to remind me. What can you do to remind yourself?
2. First thing in the morning ask yourself. What would *I* like today to be like? What is *MY* intention for today?
3. Create a daily routine that has at least 15 minutes in it just for you. A routine helps to get us grounded and feel in control in a new country - and it has to include something for YOU to really work. No excuses!
4. If you already have a routine, take a good look at it and ask yourself - where am I nourishing ME? Then take that first step and do something about it.
5. Make a date with yourself. Plan to do something you really love to do. Looking forward to a treat can lift you from those down moments we all have abroad (and don't forget to allow yourself to enjoy your own pleasure on the date itself!)
6. Celebrate your achievements. Whether it is going into town by yourself or driving for the first time or speaking to someone on the phone in a new language - these are *BIG* steps. Do it for YOU!
7. It isn't about being "selfish", it about being your best. Look into your heart and you know it makes sense!
Cheers!
