Getting There
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuColombia - Getting There
The main airport is El Dorado International Airport which is located approximately 12 km from the city of Bogota. This makes airport transfer time very short. Easy airport transfers are available with both buses and taxis. Onward tickets are required and although the airlines will insist that all the paperwork is in order and will strictly enforce this rule, often upon arrival no immigration officials will be available to check that this paperwork is in fact all in order, and a return ticket will not have to be shown.
Travelling into Colombia via the sea is also possible with sailboats that go from Cartagena to Colón in Panama. Colombia is actually surrounded on 3 sides by water and so it is a very easy country to reach if wishing to travel by sea. The main sea ports of Colombia are Cartagena, Buenaventura, Barranquilla, Turnaco and Santa Marta. Cruise ships often dock in Colombia from such destinations as the Caribbean Islands, USA and Venezuela. When travelling from Central American locations and Mexico this is also one of the nicest ways to arrive.
Road travel in Colombia is not for the faint hearted. Often unpaved the roads are usually of a poor standard. Travelling by bus is not a good way to relax, so if the plan is for a nice leisurely journey to another area then it may be wise to consider other options. There are many roads covering the whole of the country, journeys can be extremely long, especially through mountainous areas. It is also not a good idea to travel by road during the rainy season and often roads can be washed away and landslides are common.
It is worth noting that if travelling by road then all paperwork must be available to be produced to authorities upon request. To travel by road in Colombia there is a special visa required. This is available from your local embassy.
