Colombia has a coastline both on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Towards the north west of the country lies the Panama border, the Venezuelan and Brazilian borders are to the east and to the south lie the borders to Peru and Ecuador. The country is approximately twice the size of France. The proximity of Colombia to the Equator means that there is little variation in temperature throughout the year.

The Caribbean coast on the northern edge of the country enjoys a hot and tropical climate, although there is a rainy season between May and November. The average rainfall every year is 2000-2500mm although the average temperature is fairly high at 25°C.

Towards the east of the country the climate becomes much drier. This area has a rainy season which covers the months of April, October and November but the rest of the year is dry as the annual rainfall averages at around 270mm. The average temperature is not much different from that on the Caribbean at around 27°C.

The climate along the northern coast line can be described as tropical; the area is rainy and humid all year round. The average annual rainfall is between 3000 and 6000mm, making this area one of wettest places worldwide thought the average temperature is only slightly lower than the rest of the country at around 23°C.

In the region that is home to the Andes mountain range there are usually two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The two rainy seasons are between the months of April and June and again between September and November. The two dry seasons take place during the months of December and March and the latter, shorter dry season takes place in July and August.

Los Llanos is located in the central Eastern plains. This part of the country has two distinct seasons. The first spans from December to March and the second is the rainy season between April and November. The annual rainfall for this region is about 2500mm and the all year round temperature average is about 23°C.

With the dry seasons being between December and March and again for the shorter period between July and August, these are the ideal times for visitors to travel to Colombia.

The warmer temperatures are ideal for those who are looking to retire to a warmer climate. Expats moving to Colombia will only need lightweight clothing but will also need water proof gear during the rainy seasons.
