The main banks in Estonia are Hansapank, ÃÅ"hispank, and Sampo Pank. Foreigners should bear in mind that these banks are the most accessible to them, as they make a policy of serving tourists; less paperwork is likely to be required for the opening of an account, for example.

Anyone can open a bank account in Estonia. The account may be opened in foreign currency or in Estonian Kroons, but many banks ask for a minimum amount of money to open an account. The average asked is 13 DEM (2000). Photo ID is required and it is advisable to bring some proof of address and employment, depending upon the type of account to be secured.

Most banks are closed on the weekends, and keep regular office hours Monday to Friday, 09.00 to 16.00. Currency exchange offices are open Monday to Friday from 09.00 to 18.00 and often on Saturdays from 09.00 to 15.00. A few are open on Sundays in major cities.
