The Estonian education system has undergone dramatic changes over the past few decades with a national curriculum being established by the government. Despite what might be considered quite severe disruption, the standard of education in Estonia remains high.
The Constitution of the Republic affirms that education is the right of every individual.
The state and local governments arrange children's education and studies in pre-school institutions and compulsory school attendance starts at the age of seven. School attendance is compulsory from the age of 7 to age 17 in Estonia. The school year lasts for 175 days and including holidays, it runs from September 1 until June.
For non-Estonian speakers, there is the International School of Estonia in Eallinn. (www.online.ee/iese). There are also programs available to foreigners (non-Estonian speakers); information about which is available through the local consulates.
