Education and Schools

Florida - Education and Schools

QUICK LINKS: Florida Guide - USA Discussion Forum - USA Property Listings

Florida's public schools are run by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). Florida has 67 school districts. Which school your child attends depends on which district you live in.

Florida also has hundreds of private schools located throughout the state, ranging in educational focus and cost. The Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS) is one of the largest independent school organizations in the United States. FCIS is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and an affiliate of the Council for American Private Education (CAPE). FCIS is a founding member of the Florida Association of Academic Non-Public Schools (FAANS). Click here for a list of FCIS member schools.

Florida's large international population has meant that more schools are developing more of an international curriculum. Many schools have embraced the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. The Florida League of IB Schools (FLIBS) currently has 40 member schools located throughout the state.

Florida has a large system of public and private colleges and universities. Florida's 11 public universities are run by the State University System of Florida. The Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF) manages the state's 28 private universities. Florida also has 28 community colleges that are run by the Florida Community Colleges System. There are also 20 colleges and universities in Florida that are not affiliated with the ICUF but are fully accredited.
